Dog keeps scratching

I have a 3 year old Australian shepherd Husky mix and in the last week he has been scratching his whole body like crazy. He is on trifexis and i have searched him under all the fluff and haven't seen any fleas. I found the area on the attached photo on his belly one of the only places without hair. He has scabs all over from scratching. He has had two hot spots but they were over a year + ago. I haven't changed his diet or given any new foods to him recently either.

Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

With this much scratching and the fact that it is diffuse and not localized, I would be thinking allergies. Most dogs that develop environmental allergies do so between the ages of 1.5-3 years. Springtime is the beginning of allergy season in most parts of the country and it is likely the allergens he is sensitive to, he developed last year and now that he is re-exposed, the immune system is overacting and causing the symptoms. The scales or scabs that you are seeing are a secondary bacterial infection (Staph), typical of what you are seeing with the ear flap. If their is an odor to the skin, especially on the abdominal wall, then there is likely a secondary yeast infection as well. Better get him to the vet as this will only continue to get worse. Chances are he will get some steroid and be sent home some oral antibiotics (Cephalexin or Clavamox). Be sure to put your dog on probiotics while and after the antibiotics and steroids. If it becomes a chronic situation, might want to consult a holistic vet that will help you get his immune system back into balance. Good luck.
