Dog is growling and snapping at tail randomly.

My dog randomly starts growling and snapping at his tail angrily and this state will last for about 3 seconds when he returns back to normal. During this time he barks and sometimes makes like a yelping noise.

I think something is hurting him. He will just be sitting there on the carpet and then suddenly he will spring up and start doing it. It never happens on walks or when we are petting him, only when he has been relaxing for a bit and then suddenly he will jump up and start barking.

We thought it was fleas so we got some expensive flea medicine and also a flea collar for him but the issue hasn't been resolved for some time now. The vet wasn't very helpful, they basically just said it was fleas.

It's now been going on for a while and it happens every 30 minutes or so. When we were checking his fur for fleas we couldn't find anything. However, recently a white bump appeared on his tail. But this bump a long time after he started doing it so I'm not sure it is related.

I'm not sure how to help him

Well, first, flea collars don't generally work. I would ask your vet for Trifexis, which will keep fleas off and also is for heart worms. If your dog has fleas you will want to address this immediately. Not only for his health, but you don't want them laying eggs in your house, carpet, etc or you'll never get rid of them.
