Dog Coughs Up at Night

My dog is a 9-year old Labradoodle. Recently, he's been coughing loudly during the night and coughing up a small amount of a brownish bile. Sometimes, it's kind of foamy.

He doesn't seem to do any of this during the day. Only early morning around 3 am. And it only happens from his bed and not when he's laying down on the carpet.

He's eating well. He's active and got a great checkup a few months ago when he got his shots.

He's a licker. So I thought he might be getting some hair in his stomach and is needing to hack it up. But I'm not seeing any hair in the bile.

Sorry for the gross first post. Thanks for any replies in advance.

Hi and welcome to DogForum!

Is he doing this every night? How long has he been doing it for? Have you recently changed his food?

Personally, I always call my vet when my dog does something concerning. Very often, they say, "no big deal, keep an eye on it and if XYZ happens, call back." It makes me feel better.

No food change. The wife did get him some new chew bones a couple of weeks ago.

I think I'll take a closer look at those bones. He's not having any issues with constipation as far as I can tell. I'll cut him off the bones for a while to see if it improves.

Definitely get him to your vet for a checkup. It could be a number of things and might be nothing serious but with his age I'd definitely want to have his heart checked as I know coughing especially at night is a sign of heart issues.

It could be as simple as allergies, but you need to have him checked at your Vet's to be sure.
