Dog bent/cracked a nail...

Wednesday night, my dog - Autumn - went chasing coons again and came back bleeding - she had bent/cracked a nail. The top of the nail was at about a 75 degree angle and still firmly attached to the rest of the nail. I put some styptic powder on it and wrapped her nail/foot so she wouldn't tear the nail more.

Thursday morning, I brought Autumn to the vet. He trimmed the broken portion to right before (after??) the bend/crack. He said to remove it at the bend/crack would require sedation. Said the top/rest of the bent nail will fall of on its own...sent us home with some vetprofen, told us to limit her exercise, and he'll call to check-in in a few days...

Is that normal? My mother says they should have done the sedation and removal.

one of our dogs did the same thing last week, vet used a local on him. Mainly because he is a gentle 85lb, but don't know what could do to a stranger hurting him! he trimmed and wrapped it, bring him back in 10 days. so far he hasn't tried to remove it, have one of those funnel, if he does. we trust this vet been with him 20 years.
good luck!
