Does puppy need to lose baby teeth before getting neutered?

I went to take my puppy in to the clinic for a pre-operation exam. The vet on call at the time told me that they don't neuter puppies until they lose all their baby teeth and that I should return in about 4 weeks. At that time, if the baby teeth haven't fallen out, they would remove the teeth if I wanted.

Sometime about purposefully having our puppy's teeth removed seemed weird to me. Is this something common?

Yes it is common. I bought my pup in the day of the surgery and they called and were not going to do it because of baby teeth. I insisted because he was already there and I had to change my work schedule. They do not like to do it in case baby teeth need to be pulled. They do not want to put them under (anesthesia) any more then they have to. Never had a problem baby teeth fell out as they should on there own.

It is common for small breed dogs to retain puppy teeth as adults. When my Maltese were spayed and neutered the vet removed the baby teeth that were still present. That way they only went under anesthesia once. If the baby teeth that are retained are not removed food accumulates and causes decay.
