Depressed dog??

My dog's behavior has changed recently. He is a lab, and accordingly eats his food in two seconds and will jump on our counters to eat more. But recently he hasn't been finishing his food, which is very uncharacteristic of him. He sleeps way more than he used to. And his shedding is way worse than usual-sometimes a whole clump will fall out. He also used to always greet me the second I got home but now he doesn't. He just lies on the floor all the time looking kind of sad. And this behavior began to surface around the time that we adopted a kitten. Could the kitten be affecting him? The kitten bothers him occasionally but it's nothing major. So i'm wondering can dogs get depressed? Idk what else it could be. He checked out as healthy at the vet, although slightly overweight-but that has always been an issue. He is turning seven in a couple months-maybe it's just old age? I just want my dog to be as healthy and happy as possible and am worried about him!

I just read this page and it does sound as if your dog might have depression but I don't know. I can't imagine a kitten causing it! Here's the link: Symptoms of Depression in Dogs

Lethargic, overweight, hair falling out... At the risk of sounding like a broken record, might be time for a thyroid blood panel. T4, T3 and TSH.
