I have a 9 month old dachshund that was spayed on Thursday 8/4/2016, about 6 weeks after finishing her first heat cycle.
The surgery went well and Jovi acted as expected when returning home that day...very sleepy, staying in her crate most of the night, and not interested in food or water. I was able to coax her into a couple treats so I could give her a dose of her pain med, Rimadyl.
The following day she was still very lethargic and still not interested in food or water. She would eat some treats and a little bit of watermelon (her favorite treat that I share with her nightly this summer), but would not touch her food or water bowls. She was given pain med as presribed on Friday.
Saturday was the same so we brought her back to the vet for a check up. She had a slight fever so she was given an anti-biotic shot. She was also given an IV shot for fluids, and an anti-nauseous shot to see if that would help with appetite.
By Sunday morning she was acting more like herself when awake (going for short walks, given us excited greetings when we return home, chewing on her bones) but she still had not touched her water or food bowls, only eating a few treats and pieces of watermelon. Saturday and Sunday I did not give her pain med in case that was upsetting her.
Monday still no food or water so I brought her back to the vet again. No fever, incision looked fine, walking fine so the vet seemed to think she's okay and just needs more recovery time. Vet recommended give the pain med this day so we did.
Tuesday and now Wednesday are more or less the same. She is still sleeping more than usual. the last couple days she seems to be more whiney. Still no water, and wouldn't touch her food. I called the vet today and she suggested canned food because it will be stinky (enticing) and have some liquid in it. I got some wet canned food (vs her normal kibble) and she gobbled up a small serving of that. Will give her another serving shortly. I also bought some children's pedialyte but have not yet tried giving it to her.
Each day she usually poops once or twice although it's very small due to limited food. She pees a couples time a day but it's dark due to the dehydration.
Today is day 7 and she has been wearing an inflatable cone at night and when we leave her for a couple hours during the day. She has shown no interest in her incision (which is healing nicely) so I'm going to stop with the cone in case that is causing her to be depressed.
Any thoughts or suggestions??
Is this cause for concern or does she really just need more recovery time?
I can't imagine she'll starve herself but it's unnerving that she still is not recovered.
Thank you for reading and in advance for any help you can offer.
