Coughing and Hacking

Hey, guys! Sorry to only show up when things aren't going well, but last night Mitzi's started hacking and coughing really bad. At first I thought she was trying to throw up, but after it kept going all day without anything actually coming out I decided she must actually be coughing. Other than that she doesn't act sick, she still runs around, begs for food, and wants to go on walks. We were getting cold rain for a couple days last week and I had to take her out in it so she could go to the bathroom. Can dogs catch colds? She hasn't been in contact with any other dogs, so I don't think she's caught anything like that. What do you guys think, could this be serious? Like I said, apart from the coughing she's still acting normal. She even stops coughing altogether when I bring her outside. I'd prefer not to pay for a vet visit if this is something that'll pass on its own.

Dogs can catch colds, flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, all those good things, just like us. It can also be allergies. If it goes on for more than a day or two, best to bite the bullet and take her to the Vet for an exam, diagnoses, and treatment plan.
Rain likes this.

Thanks for the input. I realized after posting this that she actually was in contact with other dogs for a while on Thursday when I took her to the groomer, so I suppose it's possible she may have caught kennel cough or something while she was there. Then again, I gave her an allergy pill I got a Petco a couple hours ago, and the coughing's stopped. I'll see how she's doing tomorrow before jumping to any conclusions, though.

It could be allergies, kennel cough, reverse sneezing, trachea being pressed on, or something else.

Rule out kennel cough first, just to be on the safe side.

What do you use to walk her? Has she ever pulled on a walk and started coughing? If she has then her trachea might have gotten pressed enough to cause the coughing, and once it's irritated a dog will cough even when she's not being walked.. My dog used to get a hacking cough, and at times would cough enough to spit up, and with him it was his trachea. It took me a little over a year to find a harness that fit him, didn't choke him, didn't cause some sort of other problem, and that he didn't mind wearing. Until I did he'd go into coughing fits every now and then.

She does pull on the leash, but it's never made her cough.
