Constant Diarrhea and Gas

My 9 yr old Yorkshire Terrier started having bad diarrhea and gas since the end of last month. We've taken her to the vet who put her on an extremely bland diet of Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric and a weeks worth of metrozidasole. After the week, she seemed better but started up again after 4 days. She's not allowed anything but the Pro Plan, rice, egg whites, and boiled chicken. The Vet put her back on some of the metrozidasole until the first when we can afford more bloodwork and tests.

She gets really sick and the poop just runs out of her. The gas is very strong and she just doesn't seem to feel well. Had anyone else experienced this with their dog?

Our Yorkie just went through the same thing. He had severe bloody diahreaa . He was on the same medication. I gave boiled Turkey and rice for five days and then gradually added back his Pro Plan Sport 30/20 kibble. I also give one tsp plain pumpkin with each meal. He is doing great now. I'm just very careful on the amount of food and no treats at all.
This worked for us.
I hope your pup feels better soon.

Last time my dog was that bad it was a combination of colitis and a sensitivity to chicken. Stress and anxiety triggered the colitis and the chicken just kept it going. What worked for my dog was fasting him for 24 hours (luckily he was off his food) then getting all chicken out of his diet. I made him homecooked food of lean ground meat and cooked sweet potatoes, kept him on that for a good 3 days, then slowly started mixing him his chicken free dog food.

Try 50% lean ground beef cooked and what little fat is in it drained off, and 50% baked sweet potato (discard the skin) mix together and see if that helps.

Thanks for the tips. She's off of everything except the Pro Plan, egg whites, and chicken. If she has too much rice, she can't go at all.

She's still having issues. She'll be fine a few days and then have really bad, runny diarrhea. We're trying just to get through Christmas, so is there anything else that we can maybe try?

Dont give tap water- give boiled cooled water, filtered or bottled water only. Ask your petshop for a canine digest- aid that balances your dogs gut. Also fresh large bones to gnaw on firm up poop so quick. As a general rule a I give my dog a large kuckle almost as big as her head & take it away once the knuckles eaten off. I dont let her eat the straight bit as she still chokes a bit on it.

Try changing her dog food to something with no chicken. You'd have to switch her over slowly. If she still has issues, try going grain free in addition to no chicken. They have limited ingredient dog food, which works for a lot of dogs, Natural Balance is one. Good luck and please keep us posted.
