You might give it a few days to heal up a little, but I don't think walks and such need to be eliminated. I can recall some pretty ugly looking nail tears that some of my dogs had, and they walked and ran like usual most of the time. Just take your cues from your dog...if he's limping or holding his foot up a bit after a little walking then the nail is hitting the surface and hurting the quick...but often because the nail is now shorter, it doesn't touch anything while they walk and they must not feel it all that much.
As Artdog mentioned, just keep an eye on it for infection. I've seen a lot of damaged doggy nails in my life and none became infected, but it can happen, fortunately the nails grow back pretty quick and normal looking. I did have one dog, though, who's nail grew back kind of thicker, and more gnarled looking, but it never gave her any problems...it was just never a smooth nail after that.
