Change in fur color and texture

Hi there,

My three year old terrier mix has an area where her soft light fur has changed to stiff, dark more terrier like fur. It is in a line down the spine of her back. It started as just two small spots a couple of weeks ago. Her skin itself seems fine and she has no other symptoms. I can't think of anything that would have caused this. I figured it might just be an allergic reaction, but it seems to have spread. Haven't changed food or anything like that! Any ideas? Hopefully it's not vet worthy!

Hello!

Although I am no expert, I would say it could definitely be allergies perhaps. I know that my dog is going through a huge allergy problem. I don't know if it is food or environmental allergy - and depending on the weather in your area, it could be due to pollens and grasses. Have you noticed her itching that area (rolling around, etc.)? When there is trauma to an area, the fur can become course and change colour. For example, my dog was chewing at her tail because it was itchy and some of her fur turned white and became thick and course. Her hair is dark (black) to begin with and the trauma caused it to go white. I don't know if this perhaps would be the opposite for your dog given the fact that her hair is lighter to begin with? Just a thought!

I would say as long as she isn't itching too badly, there are no wounds, and that she seems in good spirits, then she is probably fine! Just keep an eye on her for a week or two

Hope this helps!
