Bumpy Scabs on 6 month old lab/pit mix

So my 6 month old lab/pit mix has recently developed some bumpy scabs under the fur on the back of his neck and on his "armpits". There may be more, smaller bumps elsewhere, but those are the main places I've seen them. He doesn't seem to be bothered by them, but when I try to get a look, he'll pull away and scratch at it like it bothers him. Initially they're dark and crusty, but some have had the scabs scratched off. The picture is the only one I could get a good visual of under his fur without him running away. His demeanor is the same, his appetite is fine, and he's not lethargic. He's a light colored dog and I haven't seen any signs of fleas, and he's not scratching himself much anyway. Any suggestions on what this might be? I of course want to make sure he's okay, but as a grad student, constant vet trips can really break the bank, so if anyone else has experience with this, advice/ideas on what I'm dealing with would be appreciated!

Sorry. :( Vet, vet, vet.

Nobody can "diagnose" this from a photo - nor can we make any suggestions that exceed 1st-Aid advice. // Practicing medicine without a license is illegal, & there are hefty consequences for violations.

A vet can do a skin-scraping, check for external parasites, prescribe as needed, etc; we can't. :(

I agree with @leashedForLife. A vet visit is the best thing to do. My staffy/pit mix gets little bumps all over her body (head, neck etc) only in the summer time that sound very similar to what your dog has. Went to the vet and tried a few things like medicated shampoos, antibiotics, TWO skin scrapings (nothing showed up in the results) on separate visits, changing her diet but nothing worked until she prescribed a conditioner that I applied after her baths while her coat was still damp. Worked like a charm. I would definitely recommend you go to the vet.
