First I apologise if this is in the wrong place but seemed to be the best description.
So a bit of background first. I have 2 JRTs - Nelson is 3 1/2 and Poppy is 3.
Poppy is expecting her first litter on 16th of this month. Her and Nelson have been hip and eye tested, our vet has been involved since day 1 and all the puppies (5-6 according to her x-Ray) have experienced homes within my close family ready and waiting.
My family have bred large breeds for around 30 years, mostly assistance and police dogs so breeding is not something new to me and I have a lot of experience around. This is however the first time we have had both Mum and Dad raised together purely as pets, we always used studs.
I got both dogs within a few months of each other and they have been inseparable since day one. Nelson has had a few nights at the vets due to his own sheer clumsiness and the vets have always asked for Poppy to stay to keep him calm.
I have everything ready for the pups arrival - penned in whelping box, blankets, milk, food etc. I work from home and my OH has 2weeks off just in case. Poppy has just started sleeping in the box, closely followed by Nelson every time without fail.
So yesterday as recommended by the vet Nelson has gone to stay with my Father in law just in case he reacts badly to the pups or worries Poppy whilst whelping. Since he left Poppy has been lying by the front door crying and is refusing to eat. Managed to get her to take a mouthful of chicken earlier but that has been it. Nelson is in the same state although is apparently being much more vocal.
So the question really is has anyone else been through similar and would you recommend reuniting them or persist with keeping them apart until the pups are born?
I don't want to risk Nelson harming the pups but don't want Poppy distressed and starving herself either.
