Antibiotics After Tick Bite
We just found an engorged deer tick on our lab mix, Sadie, in upstate NY where Lyme Disease is rampant. We removed the tick carefully and the bite is swollen but there’s no rash. She also seemed uncomfortable today and randomly threw up which is very rare for her.
In humans, it seems that a short course of antibiotics are used effectively to prevent Lyme disease right after a tick bite, while in dogs it seems that people usually wait for symptoms to appear or a blood test to come out positive. But at that point it’s harder if not impossible to fully get rid of it.
I have an extra course of antibiotics in my freezer for her and she doesn’t react badly to them. My vet won’t be open until Tuesday and even then the vet we knew left the animal hospital so I don’t exactly know how trustworthy or cautious the new vet is yet.
I’m inclined to give her the antibiotics as a prophylaxis. I know she might not actually be infected but I think it could very well help avoid a month or more of antibiotics later when she finally tests positive, or worse. Any opinions on this? Thanks very much.
