Advice RE cancer; leg removal

I have an 11 year old Cairn Terrier. We went in for tests, and it looks likely that she has cancer-two tumors wrapped around her front leg. At first blush, to remove the tumors they would have to amputate because of where the tumors are-there wouldn't be a way to get enough skin back over the surgery to close it up. And then the question is what additional care would be needed...

Other than the tumors-she seems healthy. Active, eating, drinking. She is getting on in years. I'm really just looking for "what would you do" in this situation? Removal? Chemo? Palliative care? I feel overwhelmed.

Oh wow, sorry you are going through this.

If they are the only tumors and the dog is otherwise happy and healthy I'd probably go with amputation.

If the dog was showing signs of serious aging and would need a bunch of chemo I'd be leaning towards palliative care.

Ultimately for me it comes down to the question of which option maintains quality of life? Chemo is tough on people but I don't know how it is with dogs, I've heard of many tripod dogs being happy, though I don't know what the recovery is like, palliative care would be if I thought the dog wouldn't go well with the other options.

Hi mkskirby:

Would you share what you did and what you experienced? How your Cairn did with the surgery (if you went ahead with it) and the cancer? We just learned our 10-year old Australian Shepherd has osteosarcoma and are trying to understand what her quality of life will be as an aging dog on three legs.
