Adopted Pit bull has serious skin issue
Hello our adopted pit bull my wife and I have had for over four years has a serious skin condition. Basically his hairs clump together and his dead skin peels off leaving behind bald spots and sore red patches that are itchy. He also has very bad dandruff. We took him to the vet but the vet would not look at him up close and we were very irritated with our service. He has had this skin problem now for a little over a year. The vet dictated the entire visit about food allergies and charged us $250. She prescribed a small bag of food that was $115 for a 25 lb bag. This food seem to make him very constipated. He was on this expensive food and his skin cleared up mostly. Due to the exorbitant cost of this prescription food and the fact (I’ve read) that prescription food or not good for dogs in the long term, we tried switching him to the Rachael Ray dog food which is still quite expensive at $40 or $45 per 40lb bag (Versus the Walmart brand bag which was $28 for 50 pounds?) I have recently within the last few days tried giving him bananas, V-8 vegetable juice, and tried encouraging him to drink more water In hopes that his skin might clear up. Below are photos taken after a bath when his skin is completely flared up. He is given baths weekly. At night we make him wear a cone so he does not lick himself and make this condition even worse. Wondering if anyone has any idea what this could be or how we could clear it up? I am guessing this is some sort of severe allergy. Seems to be affecting his belly much more than his backside. Maybe he needs to be on a raw food diet? He is a fixed male pitbull approximately six or 6 1/2 years old. Very sweet boy and I hate to see him in such discomfort (itchy) Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
