My girlfriend and I recently adopted(Monday) a Schipperke mix from Seattle Humane Society. She is about 5 years they say, but has had a hard life as stray for a while but also being raised with a homeless person.
When she was picked up(8/05/15), she was a stray for who knows how long, had a torn ACL/CCL, some teeth that were no good and causing pain. She also has a few spots(back of the neck behind the head and under the neck/throat area) that are bald. She also has some ear problems and itchy skin problems.
Fortunately since the owner never came to get her, she was able to get the medical that was needed to get her into better shape. She had her ACL surgery on 8/22/15 and was in foster care for quite some time(till about 10/15/15).
The humane society said she's in week 6 of post-op recovery, however counting the calendar, she's on week 9 from the surgery. We have a vet appointment for her on 10/31/15, so next weekend.
I thought i'd post on here to see if anyone has any experience with ACL/CCL surgery recovery with doggies.
We have noticed she is still pretty stiff, refuses to weight on the leg. I do morning and night leg stretches with her for the ankle, knee, and hip joints, at about 15 reps per sessions. We also take her on walks of around 30-60 minutes per night/morning depending on the schedule.
The foster parents noticed a "lump" on the knee joint, which the vets seemed to be unconcerned about and said it was just inflammation and should disappear within a week or two(this was on mid/late September). When we adopted her, she still had the lump and they told us the same thing. The lump is still there, and hasn't decreased yet.
Of course this all is going to be brought up with the vet next week, however I thought i'd reach out to the community to see what people have to say about rehab and what we should be doing in the mean time for her.
