Hi all, our 6 month old goldendoodle, Oscar, has chronic diarrhea since forever. I want to preface this by saying he has an excellent appetite, is very active and does not seem ill in any way, other than this.
We initially tried some home remedies such as white rice and boiled chicken, canned pumpkin and other home remedies, which helped for one or two poops but then he would go back to having diarrhea.
We took him to the veterinarian about 2 weeks ago, he gave us metrodinazole, a probiotic and some special food (canned) which we mixed with his regular food.
This worked slightly but his poops were firmer but not quite there. The medicine regimen was completed and our pup is now on food we purchased specifically for puppies with tummy issues. I also purchased an over the counter probiotic. However, he continues to have diarrhea !
Poor Oscar is such a good dog he usually starts to bark when he feels it coming on so we can let him out but still. Regardless, he eats very well, is very active so I'm not sure what to do about this. Other than taking him back to the vet, which I'm not keen to do because, sad to say, I don't trust them 100 % in terms of money vs. welfare of our dog.
In other words, they do treat him and well, but they often add additional items that are not medicinal and when I've asked about it they say, "oh you don't have to buy it we just thought we'd put it in" and then they take it out. Or they have the puppy see the vet tech instead of the actual vet, like seeing a Nurse Practitioner and seeing the doctor for 2 seconds, if that.
We are stuck with this vet for now until October because we had purchased an insurance through them and both DH and I are retired and on a fixed income.
At any rate, I didnt' mean to turn this into a rant but have any of your pups had on issue with ongoing diarrhea but otherwise healthy? Oscar is so playful and is always on the go. Other than that he seems fine
