Swollen dew claw after clipping

Hello, i'm hoping someone can give me some advice please. I took my 12 year old Greyhound Arthur to the vets recently about a separate issue, but while I was there I mentioned that one of his dew claws was really long and asked the vet if she'd be able to cut it for me, which she did. A few days later the pad around the claw was swollen up and quite red. We went back to the vets and they gave him antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds.
After a couple of weeks the claw was no better, so I took him back to the vets, where they took a sample from the swelling and said it was just bloody, so thought it might be a tissue problem.
Tonight the swelling has started bleeding, so i've bandaged it up and it looks like we'll be going back to vets on Monday, but dos anyone have any experience of anything like this? The vet did say if it doesn't get better we might have to remove the claw, but i'm not happy about him having to go through the op at his age, and also the cost of it, when he was fine before they cut it!

Personally, if he were my dog I would have the vet X-ray his paw before going straight to surgery. I've know a number of greyhounds, and poodles, who have had to have toes amputated due to cancer and I would want to know if that's a possibility before the vet starts probing around the toe.

The vet did mention cancer but because she took a sample and it was just blood, she thought it was most likely to be tissue damage. An X ray was also mentioned last time but their machine was broken! Think I'll take him back tomorrow and see what they say, but do u think this could have been caused by something the vet did?

I can't imagine clipping the dew claw could cause the symptoms you're describing, but I'd be interested to find out what ends up being the diagnosis.

So just an update, been back to the vet today and saw a different one, Arthur is now on stronger antibiotics that treat bone conditions, he has to go back in a week and if he's no better, he'll have to have a chest x-ray, as the original reason for him going to the vets was he was vomiting up blood, an x-ray of his foot, and possible amputation of the claw, costing almost £500!
