The most important determining factor is your dogs skin and the type of shampoo you use.
My dog is prone to flaky skin, so before a bath I put flax, coconut or olive oil on his food for about a week, then I use a moisturizing shampoo, then I do a light coat of coconut oil on his fur after.
I bathe my dog every 6-8 weeks. If he got muddy at the park I give a good rinse with the hose before bringing him in the house. Mud only looks gross but it really isn't necessary to do a full bath from just mud. I only do baths for when he is getting that musky dog smell or has gotten something gross on him like poop.
Rinsing doesn't damage coat or skin.
