How does coat type affect absorbency

I don't have a dog, but I've been looking into various breeds so that when I'm ready, I'll have a pretty good idea of what breed I'd like to get. The most recent breed I've looked at is the brittany. My husband pointed out to me that it has a single coat. To me that sounds like it means that it might get cold in cold weather and it won't shed as much. He was concerned that it would mean that in wet weather, it will get soaked instead of its coat repelling the rain like some double coated breeds. I'm pretty sure that issue has more to do with hair texture than whether on not it's a double-coated breed. I would think that when the weather is particularly wet, the dog is going to get soaked regardless of it being double or single coated and a single coat would dry faster than a double coat.

So, those with experience, how does coat type affect how wet a dog gets on a rainy day walk...

Echo has a double coat, it does repel water but if she gets drenched it take hours to dry fully.

Generally double coated dogs were breed like that to work in all different types of weather. Like Chas said double coated dogs can take longer to dry off but its not super dupper easy to get their undercoat completely wet. Double coated dogs coats don't completely repeal the water, they still get wet in the rain though its mostly their top coat (you find more water repelant coats on retrievers, basically the dogs who frequently work in water, their coat is more oily to keep them dry, all coats still get wet to some extent though). The undercoat was designed to help keep them warm and dry, protection from the sun and cooler when they were out working.
Brittany spaniels are hunting dogs, so there used to being outside and sometimes in weather (as a breed). Most single coated dogs are fine in the winter, some of the short short coated breeds might get cold and its not uncommon for the little breeds (like Chihuahua's) to get cold quick, but some of that has to do with size and body heat regulation, and short short coats don't trap warm air and heat as well some of the longer coats. Single coats might get colder a little easier and might require a jacket in the winter especially if its super cold. But some of it has to do with the individual dogs, some just get colder easier or dislike the cold. Others love the cold and could spend hours in the cold and snow.
As for shedding, having a single coat doesn't mean less shedding. Some are just as heavy shedders as double coated dogs. Though I think brittanies aren't known (I could be wrong) for being heavy shedders.
