Dog Collar Rubbing Fur Off

My dog’s fur on the front of his neck is really thin and his neck is very bare in the front. I think it’s because of his nylon collar that he’s worn for the last two months. I recently bought a padded leather collar for him. Do you think that would help? Should I leave his collar off until it grows back? Thanks!

The new collar should help, especially if it is lighter. We have 6 dogs and some of them go without a collar most of the time when they are inside (the older dogs that wouldn't run off if a door was left open) and others have their collars on most of the time (the two that probably would run off). Some people take collars off at night or when a dog is in a crate (which is also safer). Our older dogs get their collars on for walks or car trips, in case they escape in an unknown area they'll have their tags on.

Anyways, if the new collar isn't causing an issue you could probably leave it on and the fur would grow back.

Mine don't wear collars at home. In fact, they don't wear them at all. They use collar/leash combos when we go anywhere, and are microchipped. I have considered collars, but even still they wouldn't wear them unless going somewhere away from home.

I use a soft bandana on my dog, no collar unless going for a walk as it clicks onto her harness so she cant get out of it. The tags can go on the bandana. The collar she has for walks is specifically designed for miniatures & I bought it at the vet, it's half the width of the usual ones. It's not a cat collar, it has a buckle & a dog label plus reflector strips. This enables her to move her head easily without restriction. The type of fur mine has is like fine short velvet & known for rubbing off, hers never has with the way I do it. It's winter atmo & shes wearing a scarf my flatmate knitted herName: 20180821_230346_1534934300239.jpg

Size: 30.2 KB for her birthday. She loves it & it keeps her neck warm. Your dogs soooo beautiful.

I stopped using a collar too. Mostly because she can't escape the yard, doesn't dart out of the door, and I've heard horror stories of dogs getting their collars stuck and strangling themselves. But I'd definitely keep it on if I had an escape artist.

It took months for the fur to look normal around the neck again.
