Is it worthwhile to use poop bags or just use plastic bags to hold the poops will do?

Hi,

I am wondering if it is necessary to purchase those poop bags to collect dog poop while walking them, or do you think a plastic bag can do the job?

I have heard stories of neighbors complaining about other tossed bagged dog poop in someone else’s trash can will dog poop bags solve this problem?

Any plastic bag will do. Many poop bags are "biodegradable" but in reality nothing really biodegrades in a landfill once encapsulated so it is a pretty much a feel good worthless marketing feature.

Poop bags are just way more convenient, compact, and transportable IMO but a bag is a bag. Repurposing grocery store plastic bags is a great way to reduce waste vs just tossing them to turn around and buy poop bags.

Even bagged poop stinks which is why some may get irritated for using their can, especially non dog owners...I only ever use other's cans if they are already out on the street for pickup.

I get the biodegradable bags as well. Plus the ones I have came with a little dispenser that I hook onto the end of the leash or sometimes on my dog's harness. It's just easier.

If you are looking for what's probably best for the environment, there are water soluble, flushable bags available. Collect the poop, then flush it. I use them if I'm close to home and won't have to carry it for too long, though the claim is they won't dissolve until it is submerged. For the record, I have never had one dissolve or even look like it was beginning to before I flushed it.

I like the bags made for dog poo because when I have to carry it, it doesn't smell. When I've used sandwich baggies, I can smell the poo while I'm carrying it. I also DO NOT put my dog's poo in other people's garbage cans, that's just rude; they have to pull it back into their yard & who likes to smell poo when you open your can to put your household garbage in. My dog, my poo, my can, my responsibility!
