What is your vacuum cleaner of choice? Looking for suggestions

My wife's vacuum cleaner is on its last legs, and we need something that can pick up pet hair, specifically Samoyed hair and tumbleweeds. She has an aversion to upright vacuums (but hasn't ruled them out as this seems to be the way all super powerful vacuums are going), as she finds the hose attachments cumbersome usually - she likes being able to step on the release lever of a 2-piece and get into corners and under couches then pop it back in - no unwinding a hose and then coiling it back.

So, anyone have a suggestion of a decent 2-piece, or upright with an easy to mange hose system? Thanks in advance.

I use a Dyson. It is several years old now, and imo it does a great job. I tested it out when I first bought it by vacuuming the carpet, emptying the canister and then vacuuming the same area again. Not much was picked up the second time, so it seemed to have worked great the first time. As far as the tools go, I have found that most vacuums are a bit cumbersome. I'm just used to mine already. But I have often wondered how well a central vacuum system works.

I have a Shark. Probably not as good as a Dyson (which I want!) but it's cheaper. A little on the heavy side, but it maneuvers easily. It has a hose, so doesn't fit what you're looking for exactly, but it does have a pet hair attachment that works well.

For Toby, our central vacuum system handles the hair really well. The suction is quite powerful. Basically it's a giant canister vacuum, with the canister/motor mounted in the garage. Throughout the house are various outlets where you can plug the hose in and away you go.

That said, my boyfriend's parents do professional carpet cleaning, and they know carpets! His mom actually prefers a high-quality one piece canister to a central vacuuming system. I think the main thing is not to skimp out on quality as a good vacuum will last you for ages. My Hoover canister is just middle-of-the road price-wise, but has a really powerful motor (I did the whole consumer research thing) and it's pretty powerful and tough.

The problem is my wife over-researches EVERYTHING, and she'll take something like the dyson with 600 5-star review and 30 1-star reviews and focus on the negatives.
She's been talking about getting a new one for literally 6 months and I just want one so she'll stop talking about it.
:D

Personally I can't believe a $700 vacuum is noticeably better than a $400 vacuum.

But a British accent in commercials is worth about $300 it seems...

We have the Bissell Pet (something? PetGroom, Petvac? ProGroom?). We've had it for almost three years and it still works like new. It was on sale a Walmart for $70 (around there anyway) when we bought it.

Dyson. My parents' own a cleaning company I work part time with, and NOTHING beats a Dyson.

I have a basic hoover. It does ok. Looking to get a new one as well, but damn the good ones aren't cheap. The Dyson seems to be ok, but the bin doesn't really hold much. Miele seems to be great, but pricey and heavy.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what the majority rules.

My mom and I both have Mieles and honestly I wouldn't reccommend it at all. Both of ours have needed to be serviced. Mom actually sent hers to the Miele factory to get fixed. When it came bacj it worked great for a month or two, but went back to its old tricks pretty fast. And mom has bichons, so this is just normal use for someone with no pet hair to suck up.

sapphir, the Dysons are really easy to empty. We can vacuum our house a few times before emptying, and then is literally holding the canister over the garbage and pushing a button, then back onto the vacuum.

I recently, about 4 months ago, purchased an Eureka Gold, which claims on a big label right on the vacuum "Better than a Dyson at 1/2 the price!" It has a similar direct to the canister whirlwind suction that Dyson is known for.

My older vacuum started eating belts for some reason, and I got tired of replacing a belt after only 1 or 2 uses.

I know people who have Dysons who love their units. And all I can say for my Eureka is that I was literally jaw-dropping stunned at how much hair collected in the canister.

My older vacuum was really nice and I know it sucked up a lot of hair...but after using that Eureka just once, my carpet actually lightened by 1/2 a shade and even felt different from under my bare feet...softer.

The only drawback to the Eureka that I don't like, is there's an attachment that clicks onto it via a magnet...and the magnet's not strong enough as the attachment drops off sometimes. But given the price and performance so far, I'm tickled with my Eureka.

Well, personally, we are satisfied with the amount the canister carries, considering we can vacuum our house several times over, with 3-4 indoor/outdoor setters, outdoors also having a lot of sand tracked in, before needing to empty it :) For as effective as they are and simple enough to empty, I don't see the detraction of perhaps their canister not holding as much as a bagged vacuum might.

When I moved out I had to find a vacuum without being to do much research. I got this guy here: AirSpeed® UNLIMITED Pet AS3033A

It works REALLY well. Dolly is long haired and it picks it up without any issue. It also vacuums up the sawdust from my guinea pigs really well too. Not to mention all of the sand in the dirt around my apartment - it has no problem picking that up from the carpet. The only downside to it is the pet attachment is kind of weird. When I put it on the hose the suction is so good I have a hard time extending the hose.

In looking at the Eureka list of vacuums, the one I have is comparable to their AirSpeed® AS1001A -- mine is labeled a little differently with that 'gold' label and the big label on the canister that claims it's 'better than a Dyson at 1/2 the price'

I might also say, I like their see through hose...it makes sense. If it ever get's clogged by something it takes the guess work out of figuring out where the clog is at in the hose. : )

I got a Eureka that is supposed to be made for the Pet Industry. It picks up great but everytime I use it on my one little carpet that Susie sleeps on, it plugs up. When it is working it is great but I hate to have to keep taking it apart to get the plugged up hair out of it.

Easy to empty, no bags, just hold it over a garbage bag and push a button.
