Running and Dog Gear?

Hey guys,

I run with our 50lb English Pointer mix, who is 14 months old. We live in St Louis, and the weather from Thursday onwards is going to finally be below 20 degrees for the winter. We run 5km, and we do it in less than 25 minutes, usually around 21 minutes, so a pretty quick pace.

My dog obviously has a shorter coat. We run on paths and concrete, etc, and there will probably be very little snow in St Louis, most likely just ice.

Does my dog need a sport coat for running, or will she generate enough heat from the pace of our run that she will be fine?

Also, I was thinking of getting some balm for her paws, what kind should I purchase? I know salt will be our biggest issue as a result of the ice, and she has a huge tendency to lick her paws so I want some balm, then I'll clean her paws post run.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice given.

I dont know about the coat wise but as far as salt and there paw care all you really need is Vaseline, that works just as good to protect there paws, and ive used that myself. take this advice with a grain of salt so I hope others can help more then i can :)

I luckily don't have to deal with snow or ice but when I first started agility the rough surfaces would rip my dog's pads up. I bought Musher's Secret and really liked it. It's thicker then Vaseline. Also have you considered boots? I know a lot of people recommend the Ruffwear brands.

Hey, there! I run and bike with my schnauzer regularly but have never used balm since we don’t get snow here in NC. We’ve never had problems so no advice in that area however, I would say no to the sports jacket. My boy has generated enough heat through the winter while running to keep him comfortable. Of course, our winters are maybe 25 degrees f at the coldest where your winters may be colder. I would see how your dog does once it gets colder, then decide. Best of luck!
