I have decided to get a pit from my local shelter, but my only concern is the cold weather as I spend hours outside every day, so I wondering what you have in your dog's wardrobe for the "harsh" winter? Currently it is -11°F outside.
I wouldn't recommend keeping any dog outside when it's that cold for any long amount of time. If you do short walks or just outside for quick potty or play time look into getting a sweater/jacket and maybe even doggie boots.
No problem, and just keep in mind, just because you can't spend hours out with the dog when it's that cold now dosnt mean it's going to stay that cold out. And I'm sure others can give you tips.
I am also out with my dog for hours at a time on harsh cold days hiking... colder than -11. She has Muttluks winter boots and Ruffwear Powder Hound jacket.
The boots are key to staying out for longer periods for us. Before I got them, half hour tops was when she wanted to go home. https://ruffwear.com/collections/apparel/products/powder-hound-jacket
I wouldn't recommend taking your dog out or being out for that long. Dog's do get cold. I read an article about how you can tell if a dog is cold! You can read here: https://swifto.com/blog/how-tell-if-your-dog-cold
Usually, when they start shaking it means they are way too cold. Just a quick thing to keep in mind. Make sure you are able to provide warmth for your dog, even though you are outside, maybe there is a place for your dog to stay even after its been out for a bit!
Get a coat and booties but there is really NO REASON to have your house dog outside for HOURS if it is -11 you're risking illness and the dog will probably be miserable. Even some short haired breeds like to run in snow and play but that's brief periods.
I know not everyone would agree, but when it is cold I have my pug wear clothes too. But I really don't like those standard things they sell at the local pet shop. If he has to wear clothes anyway, than why not have something that actually looks cool as well.
I agree with the previous replies. It's not good to keep them outside for hours in such a cold weather. You can buy them some thick clothing or jacket to keep them warm for a while.
You can buy dog clothes online at a lot of places now. One place I really like is Pug You. They also provide custom orders so if you have a design in mind they can make it.
