Looking for a large portable fence used only during play time

Hi all,

We're thinking about buying a house that has an OK backyard but to give our border collie / bird dog more running room, we want to fence in some side yard. The property line may be about 5 feet away from the house but the side yard itself has a lot more usable space than that. Since fencing in 5 feet feels a little too narrow, we're wondering if we can temporarily roll out a fence during play time to include more side yard. The problem is we're probably talking about over 50 feet of fence needed.

I guess invisible fence might be an option, but we worry that if our big girl sees a bird or something, only a physical barrier will stop her from chasing it to the end of the Earth. We've never tried it.

Another idea is a long tethered leash, but if it got wrapped around her leg or somehow tripped her while she was running, there could be some real risk of injury.

What ideas do you have for us? Pickles appreciates your time.

Places like Tractor Supply or a farm store sell step in fence posts, they are usually red and look a bit like concrete rebar. Get those, some of what they call Horse Tape and, the fasteners to attach the horse tape to the poles. You don't need to electrify the fence unless your girl is a real escape artist and has no respect for a fence.

What it does is make a movable, easy to assemble fence that can be taken down and stored in a small space if needed.

Thanks Halo,

I googled some images of horse tape and the gaps in the pics make me nervous. My dog is 50 pounds so she can fit through some fairly small spaces. I also wonder if she would just run right through the tape. I'm going to find some in real life and try to get a feel for how sturdy it is.

That's just how the ta[e was ran for the pictures, on the assumption it's for a horse. You decide the spacing for the poles and, how far apart each row of fence will be vertically. It is nylon reinforced with metal wire. I use it for play pens for wolfdogs when we travel with them. It can hold 125 pound plus dogs in as long as it's tight and they can't force larger gaps that you want.
