My dog has the Gooby choke-free comfort x-harness. I've tried keeping it snug and keeping it loose, but he always gets raw spots in his armpits after a little while. This is only on walks, no running. He has very thin fur, and in his armpits/underside he has basically no fur. He also seems to have a "long" chest, so a lot of harnesses don't quite fit around the barrel. Does anyone have any suggestions for a type of harness, or something I can do to help ease the chafing?
If you are looking for choke free then one of the other types of puppia may work.
Depending on your dog's size you may have to just break down and get a custom made harness that is felt lined, that's what I ended up doing with my boy since he's extremely hard to fit, has a naked undercarriage, and an extremely sensitive throat. I did try the Puppia harnesses for him and while they did fit they also still choked him. I ended up getting a harness from Puppanache off etsy but I'm not sure if she ships to your location or if she did what the cost of shipping may be, the harness by itself is around $35.
Almost forgot to add, you'll have to look for the Puppia harnesses on places like Amazon, or Chewy.com, the Puppia website is for wholesale.
Right now I'm using the Top Paw harness from Petsmart. It's completely lined, and is a solid shape, so I find that it doesn't move and shift on him the way other harnesses that I've tried have done- meaning less rubbing under his pits.
I do plan on having one custom-made once weather is nicer but this is a nice because Shamas doesn't have bald pits or sores anymore
The downside- it comes in 3 sizes, and has little room for adjustment, so you either fit it or you don't. Back clasp may or may not be a downside depending on how you walk
Depends on the size of the dog as well there are lots of soft harnesses out there, Ruffwear's webmaster harness is good for elderly dogs and pups with mobility challenges while the puppia soft harness is a classic prototype soft harness which is good all around and a classic soft vest harness from bingpet.
My HALTI harness is padded on the bits under her front legs- also I have it fitted so its not close to her arm pits or leg pits I guess I should call them. Have had no chafing & she has soft short downy fur & is a very sensitive wee thing.
