I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or advice with GPS tracking collars, specifically ones which will avert thieves!
I ask because I am just about to get a little dog, purebreed and young/fluffy, a very appealing target unfortunately. I also live in East London, not the safest area. So my main concern is she could be stolen, I will obviously take all the immediate precautions like good locks etc, but thieves can be sneaky round here and even a small tracker attached to a normal collar would simply be taken off. So I'm wondering if there are any affordable GPS collars which are strong and locked well enough that a thief would notice and avoid the hassle? I need as much of a thief proof collar as possible. Any recommendations or advice??
I think the best way to prevent thievery is by not leaving your dog alone outside stores and making sure your doors are locked when you leave the house.
I have a hunter in my street and his field pointer wears one. That thing cost around $800 and personally I don't have the money to spend on something like that. I'm sure you can find cheaper models as well though.
There is also this thing, but it doesn't look very hard to get off. Whistle GPS Pet Tracker - Complete Kit | Whistle

I have a garmin gps e-collar for one of my dogs. He only wears it when we're going out into the country. It was kind of pricy and isn't really a 24/7 sort of comfortable. I don't think a gps collar is really what you're looking for.
I doubt any sort of collar will stop someone from stealing your dog. There is not a collar made that they could not get off your dog if they wanted to. A gps collar is good for hunting dogs to find them but that is all it is really good for.
Agree a collar will not prevent a thief. Your dog depends on you to keep her safe. We never leave Samantha in the car alone, never leave her anywhere alone, except at home behind locked doors. We may be over protective, but so be it, Samantha is worth whatever it takes to keep her safe.
Yes, as I said, I will do all the obvious things to keep her safe, e.g. get good locks, never leave her alone outside a shop, in a car, in the garden by herself. That's never been a question for me, that's always been just basic care for a dog for me. But I live in a tricky part of London, and there have been people breaking into private homes to get dogs, or grabbing dogs from owners while out on a walk. So I was just wondering if there were any good recommendations for GPS options as an extra precaution.

How do you think a GPS collar would protect your dog? Intruder alarms/security cameras in and around your house might deter potential thieves. But a collar? It would have to be made from metal with a metal locking system otherwise it would simply be removed by the thieves. It would be pretty large and very uncomfortable.
You should try Trackidog, I understand that dog gps trackers don't really prevent thievery but it can always make them think twice which buys time and that really is enough.
