Those of you who use doggy doors, what sort of security measures do you use to prevent home break ins? Especially those who use the sliding door inserts; is it possible to lock your sliding door with a doggy door installed?
We are moving this year from a 6th floor condo. We are also planning to add a second pup to our pack, and a human baby! (Don't worry, puppy won't arrive until after baby when we decide we are ready). Our new home will have a fenced yard. In the fenced yard we will also have a large aviary for my Indian Ringneck Parakeets. The fence will have one of those laser security systems where you can set the sensitivity so if I cat climbs the fence no big deal, and if a human does, the alarm goes off. We will have video surveillance with recording, and an additional alarm on the aviary door as well as a motion detecting flood light (can you tell I've had parrots stolen in the past?) and of course a reasonable home security system protecting the non-pooch doors and windows.
I want my dogs to be able to go in and out for MANY reasons; It's more pleasant for them, Ranger loves sunbathing, it's helpful when he has an upset stomach (every time he is stressed), it makes potty training a puppy easier, I'll have a tiny human and it will be nice not to have to jump up every 5 seconds to take the puppy out (even though I know he will still need a structured potty schedule to a significant degree), and of course, I want my big scary dogs to be able to access the yard of someone is trying to get at my birds, unlike last time when we were gone and Ranger was locked in the house.
But my husband is concerned about the security risk. My dog is TALL. He Is is half GSD and he got all the height that comes with that. Our second dog will most likely be a golden retriever but that isn't settled yet. The point is, any door that lets Ranger out can let a person in. I'm of the opinion that all the extra security in the yard already can compensate, as well as the fact that no one is going to make it through the doggy door without the dogs knowing! If they climb the fence an alarm will already be sounding, a light will be shining on them, and Ranger will be on his way to scare the living daylights out of them.
I'm just wondering if you can share YOUR security measures so I can suggest them to my husband.
