Dog cooling vests.

I have seen a lot of the dog cooling vests lately in the pet stores and on Facebook ads and was wondering if anyone know if they actually keep the dogs cool or just make them more hot while wearing one?

I haven't personally used one but they assist in cooling the dog by keeping moisture that is wicked away from them keeping them cool. Kind of like those cooling towels that a lot of people who work outside use. As well at least the ones that I have considered purchasing (Ruffwear Swamp Cooler) is white so it reflects the sun better then my normally black dog would. The only negative that I have heard is that in wetter climates (climates with high moisture in the air) they may not work as well because the moisture does not wick away as fast.

I know she checks in every so often, but I know @Boxerluv uses at least 1 on her lab and loves it (and she is in the South in humid cimates)

My last dog had chronic bronchitis and hot weather affected her breathing. I kept her out of the sun on hot days but when she absolutely had to go out, her cooling vest was a lifesaver.
I presume they all work on the same principle. You soak them in water then wring out the excess - it was like a damp wash leather. Her whole body felt cooler and her respiration was 100% better. When dry the vest was quite hard but when damp it was like a soft cool body wrap.

I got an email message after being tagged in this post! Man it's been awhile since I've checked in with yall

Anywho yeah I've got two of the ruffwear swamp coolers for my girls. With ours I find the water pools towards the chest/belly area and as long as that stays wet it helps keep my girls cool. The other day we broke them out. My friend borrowed one for her border collie and we went hiking with them stopped after a few hours and checked their coats and both were still cool to the touch near/around their chest/belly area. We just have to watch and make sure we rewet it and we're usually good to go!

I have a Ruffwear swamp cooler for Bus, and have found that it helps keep him cool moreso when it's drier out, and less so when it is humid (mid atlantic here, so that is most of summer). He is mostly black, so it does help I think to reduce heat absorbed on sunny days. My preference really is to hose him off regularly, or have an area of water he can get in, but the cooling vest is a portable, travel/public friendly way of helping him cool off a bit when it's hot. I'm thinking about getting the newer Ruffwear cooling vest, as it looks like it concentrates more fabric (so more evaporation) on the chest and belly, so might work better still. We'll see :)
