We got our 5 year old Havanese on Friday eve. We bought the Iams all natural food that previous owner fed him. He has not eaten anything since we got dog. Should I be worried? He has taken sips of water and what's wired is that he'll take one small food piece into another room and leave on floor. Please advise.

If he doesn't eat by tomorrow take him to the vet.

You can try feeding him in the same room as you, he may be a dog that likes company when he eats.

We purchased our dog on craigslist from a very nice lady and he gets really excited when anyone comes home and is very friendly. Our new dog is eating a little bit. My wife sprinkled some chicken broth on the food and he ate about 1/2 cup of food. He's been really good so far. He'll stand by our patio door and look up at us when he has to go pee. I started taking him on daily walks and he really pulls, although I will just stop him once in a while and he's gotten better. The walking will get better, I hope.

Jsut a note here - you'll want to be sure to walk your pup on a harness until you get this worked out. Havanese have rather sensitive tracheas and they can be damaged easily.

So glad to hear that he is starting to eat. You can give him some high-value food such as cooked chicken or hamburger (no seasoning) to help him along until he settles in. I'm a huge believer in a raw diet for small dogs, especially the prey model as it is so good for their teeth. (Small dogs are very prone to teeth issues, and it can become a real problem as they get older, necessitating surgery). Whatever you do, use the best quality food for a small dog, no reason to cut corners as they eat so little. Take a look at the other forums (and stickies) such as training and behavior, and you will get a lot of great information about the issues you may have with him.

Congratulations on your new dog! I would recommend a harness for a puller :) Anyways, you should get your dog on a raw diet, or Solid Gold Hudchen Flocken Adult Solution! I have my dog on the puppy version and he thrives :)

Our little dog "Louis" is eating much better now and he follows my 17 year-old daughter around all the time and she doesn't seem to mind at all. One thing we have noticed is his breath is really bad. We bought some pet toothpaste to try to brush his teeth but he won't open his mouth at all (put a little paste on the finger and try to have him lick off and will but still won't open mouth so we can brush). We also bought some other little things that he can chew on but they don't do much for bad breath. Any advice?

I would work on building up trust with him before actually trying to brush his teeth. It will take time and you want it to be a positive experience. I would keep trying to get him to lick the toothpaste off. Maybe try a different flavour? Just move slowly, his teeth don't have to be brushed right away. It could also be a sign of dental disease, so you may have to get his teeth professionally cleaned by a vet.
