Want to get a doberman!

Hey guys, been wanting to get a Doberman for quite a while . Never owned a big/working breed before and wanted to know if any owners or people with experience with this breed would recommend it for a first time big dog owner. I currently own a cairn terrier mix and would like a extra dog to keep her company and also a jogging partner.

Then once after I feel confident with bigger dogs I would like to raise a presa canario.

Could you please give a bit more information on your situation? What are your expectations for the dog? How do you plan on training it? How much time do you have to dedicate to it?

Maybe you could foster a Dobe before you decide. There are many nice Dobes in rescue around here and I'm sure across the United States. I don't know where you're located but I thought I'd throw that out for your consideration.

Ditto PR and Grabby.

Dobies are great. One of my absolute favorite breeds.I have a big old red guy right now named Dash (if interested you can see him by clicking on my "Dogs" tab to the left).

Really though I need to know more about you and your lifestyle before being able to decide whether or not a dobe would be a good match! Something you should consider in addition to the questions PR asked is your current home. Renter or own your own home? BSL in the area? And any insurance issues with breeds in your area?

And if up for fostering, Grabby's suggestion is wonderful. There really are a ton of really great dobies in rescue. Fostering would allow you to spend time with different dobies so you can decide if they are for you. And you would probably also find the right dobe along the way!

I just saw in you're other thread that you're 19 and living with your mom.

I would honestly say that it would be best to wait for now until your out on your own, settled down, and own your own home. Dobies and Presas tend to be VERY difficult breeds to move with. Many rentals just are not going to allow them. It's not uncommon for there to be not only breed restrictions (often insurance related), but also weight restrictions!
And even when you do finally buy a home, you'll need to consider any BSL in the area as well as see about home owners insurance... It's not uncommon for dobe people to have a difficult time with this!
