Angry Government shutdown effects therapy dogs

This is seriously stupid, and anyone who would say therapy dogs aren't essential has never been involved with the program. They ARE essential to the patients. Not to mention: handlers are volunteers. Sick, sad, and incredibly wasteful. I feel for the patients--even more so for those denied access to entry of NIH during this congressional circus.

Unfortunately in health. Randomised Controlled Clinical Trials are the gold standard test for efficacy.
Any new treatments, therapy dogs being one example, dont have this sort of evidence base as yet.
Invest money in the research to prove it works, and then governments will be able to justify expense.

I totally agree with therapy dogs do indeed improve patients outcomes of their clinical treatment. But my and your opinion counts for jack, when it comes to forking out money. RCT's are required.

LOL! Funny that expense comes in when the handler pays for the evaluation and registration (which covers their liability insurance), they cover the vet visits and vaccines. There is no paying for therapy dog visits as they are on a volunteer basis required by registration and coverage... Sooo... where is the government expense? That's the part that has me rolling my eyes. Meanwhile, while congress gets paid for not doing their jobs, there are therapy dog teams not affiliated with the government visiting patients for no monetary value.

Government don't get it.

I disagree about the government needing to use proven methods to approve funding. That is entirely incorrect. You have to realize that these furloughs are just a political move. No one is actually trying to resolve the terrible situation our economy is in or reduce our massive debt or trim any fat. Trust me. There is so much fat to be trimmed it is unreal. The government is intentionally "trimming fat" where it will inconvenience and hurt citizens the most. The same way schools always magically need to cut music and sports and buses the second they don't get their way with the budget. It is the oldest trick in the book. Irritate and inconvenience people enough and they'll start paying more. Especially when you hurt people where it counts: their children.
They cut those children's therapy dogs because it was a horrible thing to do. There is no way in the world that virtually free program could have cost too much. I worked with the NSA for 5 years in intel and the government wastes enough money in thrown-away food every day to pay for 100 therapy dog programs. And that is absolutely no exaggeration. You have to try to appreciate the scope of the government's resources. Children getting therapy isn't getting some backer a contract and it doesn't solidify another term. It could help open up the wallets of the taxpayers and that is all it is intended for. It is horrible and it is NOT about a true lack of money. And as a therapy-dog handler I am truly appalled. :-( it is so unfair that children end up being the victims of a greedy, dirty political move like that. Children are innocent and therapy dogs do wonderful things for them.
