Got the SAR ball rolling!

So, I'm getting the ball rolling on SAR. I'm joining the SAR team in the city I'm moving to next spring, and will do my ground search and rescue course. After I'm done that, and I am an active member of the team, I will be getting my dog. I have two breeders lined up, one Malinois breeder and one Dutch Shepherd Breeder. His name will be Bram if anyone is curious, I'm completely stuck on the name.

If anyone can find ANY resources on training a SAR dog, please post! I have an in-person mentor, but I only get the chance to work with her about once a year. Remy is my grateful test subject Unfortunately she is too old to become a certified SAR dog here.

Remy says "thanks!":

There's a school in my area, the one I did obedience at, which is renowned for SAR work. Let me go find you the info...I don't know what they have posted but maybe it will help to have an extra contact when needed.

Sooooo lucky! If I had the time for the extensive team training schedule I'd sign up for the one closest to me. Excited to live vicariously through you!

Very cool, I found a couple of good books on SAR at the library, I'll try and get the names of those. Oh--one of those was called Scent of the Missing--good read.

@zoorun Ready! Training The Search and Rescue Dog is a fantastic P.R supportive book. I seriously recommend it. I've always wanted to do SAR myself and have checked the book out from my library so many times.

Some chapter titles include: The History of SAR, Functions of a SAR Dog, Choosing/Socializing the SAR Dog, Training Concepts, Wind/Scent/Dog, The Alert/Indication/All Clear signal, Wilderness Training, Scent Discrimination, Water Dog, Cadaver Dog, Anvalanche Dog, Disaster Dog, Fine Search, Evidence Search, Politics and Rewards...that's not every single one, but you can tell that it's extremely thorough. Plus it has great color pictures and diagrams.

It looks like they're updating it and coming out with a new edition. The one I've read is the 2010 one.

Awesome.

I'm interested in maybe doing SAR at some unspecified point in the future (I don't have some of the resources and time needed to commit at the moment), maybe with the fabled "next dog". I've started trying to teach myself some tracking basics with current dog in part for that reason (it's also just really enjoyable to see my dog work). While heaven knows you'll find far more advanced materials, Practical Scent Dog Training by Lue Button has been concisely helpful to me.
