I did informal dog-sitting/house sitting for a bit, and I found the following helpful:
- Write out the expectations: how many times will you walk the dogs, do you check food, water, etc..
- Have a questionnaire the owners can fill out about their dogs, including: do they bark/lunge/growl at other dogs/cats, have they ever bitten a person/other animal (if yes, explain circumstances), what cues/commands to they say to get their dogs to "drop it", "stop", "wait" etc...
- Ask for proof of rabies shot (just in case)
- If you want to do it more professionally, check with your city business licensing office and look into getting bonded and insured (in case something happens while you're pet sitting).
Those are just the basics - perhaps others have some ideas/tips/advice
