Anyone involved in Tail Wagging Tutors?
I attended a TDI orientation meeting yesterday where we were introduced to a number of different dog therapy opportunities in the area. Tail Wagging Tutors is in several elementary schools here, and there's a summer library program as well. I'm not sure I could work it into my schedule during the school year, but I typically have a more open schedule in the summer, so the library program might work for me. I've just not done pet therapy anywhere but a nursing home before, so I don't know if it would suit me or my dog. In fact, since this is not the dog with whom I visited nursing homes (that dog has passed away), I'm not sure what situation would be the best for him.
I'm welcome to tag along on some pack visits to hospitals, nursing homes, the VA hospital etc., and I may do that while waiting for my dog's paperwork to go through processing, since he can't participate until then. I was told that was a great idea, as that way I could get an idea of what the different situations are like (e.g. some local nursing homes/hospitals do group visits in a common room while others prefer the room to room approach). I also have a mentor, with whom I've been friends for a number of years even prior to this, whom I can shadow. I'm not sure that I can do that with regard to Tail Wagging Tutors, however, particularly since most people, including my mentor, do the school year classroom program, which isn't in operation at the moment. As a result, I thought I'd ask her and see if anyone had experience with a kids reading to dogs program, whether it's Tail Wagging Tutors or a similar program like Reading to Rover.
