craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums always has tons of mix breed puppies for sale or for free. Try there. And Kijiji - Post & Search Free Local Classified Ads. or Oodle Classifieds - Search Classifieds and Post Free Classifieds
I would say craigslist would be your best bet first because they are strict about prices and you cant post pets over a certain price, so they should be cheaper than kijiji and oodle for sure. Also, Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder might help out some. or try your local online news paper. You can try googling " puppies for sale in YOUR AREA HERE " and you might find some classifieds ads with puppies for sale or free.

Have you found any puppies yet? I think your big doggy would like a bigger puppy to be rough with and play with because with a smaller breed, he couldnt be as rough with and it wouldnt be as fun..but thats just my opinion.

if you have a big dog, i would suggest getting at least something medium sized. if you get another dog of the opposite sex (assuming yours is already speutered) it will decrease competition.

please check out petfinder.com or research local rescue groups in your area. many dogs are in foster right now waiting to be adopted; all you need to do is some research.

Please don't assume a little dog will allow your current dog to remain "king of the hill". Most small dogs have no idea of size ....my 18 lb terrier mix came in as a 12 week old puppy and was immediately the "king of the hill" over my 125 lb American Bulldog. I know of a 4 lb Yorkshire terrier who had the gall to climb over a fence and go after a rottie...it cost $1,000.00 to sew him back together but he did survive.

Ladipyg, thats so very true!

A couple of weeks ago, Penny (my 11 lbs min pin) stayed with a friend while my husband and I went out of town. She had no issues telling 2 dobies and a standard poodle who was boss.

I know our local SPCA also has a long questionnaire(great) but they also don't have the budget to do fallow ups.
If Otto is fairly well socialized, I wouldn't worry about him losing his status. I have been in the same situation you are in, two separate times with a Germany Sheppard and a Lab, when I introduced a new younger dog(male or female) the older dogs seemed to get kind of a boost, more playful and active.

If you do adopt a more mature dog make sure you keep a close eye on them until you are sure there is nothing to worry about.

Don't worry so much, dogs are very adaptive with the right leadership...you! And it sounds like you know what you have to do just by being here!
