She's coming home tomorrow. I told my fiance if this doesn't work out, we aren't getting another dog because we are inept at being dog parents. :p She is 3 months old & underweight, but very sweet; we are going to fatten her up. ;)

MCACC. We were visiting the dogs again, and my fiance fell in love with this one. It's her dog, technically, not mine, so she will be more involved this time around. The puppy has a really good personality, and was very attentive to us while we spent time with her (even outside with other dogs barking). I'm worried about having a puppy though. I will need lots of puppy advice.

Thanks, it's kind of the exact opposite of last time! I'm hoping it will be much easier and a relief. I think we can handle a puppy as long as she doesn't chase the cat or turn into a terror around other dogs (which she shouldn't since we'll be working on socialization and being good around the kitty). She kept pawing at my face while I was holding her. I want to put her in pink tshirts that say "princess" (don't kill me). I'm just so worried! It's like having a new baby, and I got so overwhelmed last time around.

Well, the pound said chi mix, but who knows. She is very small, and hopefully won't get too much bigger. I told my fiance about the DNA testing, and she was like "can we do it right away?" LOL.

Thanks! :) So with an underweight puppy, do we overfeed her? Free feed? We wanted to put her on 3x a day feeding, but I'm not sure how much to start with. We are feeding Blue Buffalo Puppy and they suggest 1/4-1 cup a day (which is a giant range).

Three words when you bring her home : KEEP SHOE'S AWAY.
I'm serious, puppies love to chew up your shoe's, so I suggest any expensive pairs of shoe's, along with the other one's, get hidden in a place she can't find them. May I also suggest maybe keeping her off your bed at night? If they don't sleep through the night, and wake up having to go to the bathroom, they'll go on your bed instead of thinking twice.

Just some hopefully helpful information and tips. Good luck with her!

Its about dang time!!

I think this time will be waaaay easier than cannon was. Puppy stuff and all. I panicked when i brought home chili (first puppy) because all id heard my whole life was puppy horror stories. With your grasp on training and behavior this little one should be cake (relatively)

Id feed many small meals a day. Like 4-5

So cute! And ditto Crio, it's about time. I think you'll do just fine with her, it's much easier to prevent problems then it is to fix them.

Well, I'll just recommend my favorite puppy book to you. It is very sweet and puts everything into a nice, relaxed perspective. I think it may set you at ease and give lots of hints about why puppies do what they do, so you can understand them better and prevent problems!

You can get the new edition for 10 dollars, or the first one for about 4 dollars. I think any additional books by Patricia McConnell are great too. She's a behaviorist and seems to really understand dogs.

Amazon.com: puppy primer

Good luck, and do let us know how things are going!
Yeah! PUPPY LOVE!!! :)

Thanks, everyone. I'm taking her to the vet for her first checkup tonight since she is very lethargic, and I'm worried about her being underweight & so young. They ended up aging her at 2 mo and still spayed her (animal control policy I guess). :(

OK, I'm confused... do they think she is 2 months now, or that was a month ago and she was spayed at that age?

She sure looks like more at least 3.5 to 4 months to me now.
Those long legs are that of a fast growing pup in her "pre-teen" months.

Anyway, please let us know what the vet says!

When we adopted her yesterday, the pound had her pegged at 3 months. When the pound vet checked her out to see if she could get a rabies shot and spay earlier today, they re-evaluated at 2 months. We thought she was older since she is skinny, but I think it's that she is really underweight. She was a stray. The pound will not adopt out an unaltered pet (as far as I know). I'll post later today when I get back from the vet.

Well she just did not look like a 2 month old puppy to me, proportionally, even taking into account being underweight. But I am not so familiar with Chi's, so I could be entirely mistaken.

But it does not matter how old she is.
What matters is that you are already in love with her, and she will be coming home soon to thrive in your home!

She is one lucky puppy!

Kiwi was spayed really young also(about 12 weeks) and chili was done at 5weeks. Both did fine. Try not to stress about it. And yep its policy at many shelters. Here in Ca its state law. Not sure about az

Perhaps a parvo test at the vet just to ease your mind?

And man thoses legs are som'thing

yes it is a law in AZ I believe. Us, az humane society, mcacc, and I believe the smaller ones all alter before adopting out.

Yeah, and about the young age for spay... I think it is SOO much easier on them when young. I've seen it both ways now, and young is MUCH easier on the dog, IME anyway.

Thanks, everyone, she is fine. I'm just worrying too much as always. My vet says she's between 3 and 4 mo. old and the lethargy is due to the surgery. I got some pain pills for her since she has been shifting like she's uncomfortable. I wasn't trying to argue, Tess, just clarify. :) I really know nothing about puppies. Crio, I read your reply too late to ask about parvo. I wasn't even thinking about it. Should I be concerned?

That's great news she is doing fine! I know you were not arguing! (I took no offense!) I was just wondering if I was going nuts because she did not look like 2 mo. to me! But maybe I'm not crazy after-all...

Anyway, the point is, she is home with you now, yes? And should perk up in a couple of days. They bounce back so quickly at this age. Fingers crossed!

Enjoy the "mellow puppy" while it lasts. Cuddle her and bond with her tonight!

She looks great to me! I mean, she looks clear eyed and in pretty good shape post-spay. And her spay incision is very small. She does not look emaciated like my dog looked after her spay. And she looks like she has some muscle tone going there too.

I'd be very encouraged if I were you! She'll bee a little jumpin' bean before you know it!

Little sips of water and nice softened kibble or perhaps some bits of cooked chicken breast if you want to totally baby her! ;)
