potty training + puppy blues
I recently added Doug an 8 week old golden retriever to our family, he's so perfect and cute in every way possible! I've been having a lot of anxiety lately whether I've made a terrible mistake getting him. I want to give him the happiest and best life and I thought I read enough to understand the basic concepts of raising a puppy--books are nothing close to experiencing it haha.
He doesn't whine and sleeps through the night in his crate and I wake up atleast 2-3 times and take him to his pad. The vet said he can't go outside until he's 15 weeks due to vaccinations, but we have registered him into a puppy kindergarten socialization class for other puppies ages 8-16 weeks starting next Sunday.
Here's where I need guidance: I take him out and put him on the pad shortly after meals and typically around every 45 mins in general. Minus when I crate him to leave 2.5 hrs then I put him right on the pee pad. The good news is he is using it and I praise + treat him. But within 5-10 mins of using his pad he will start peeing on the floor. I try and pick him up to move him to the pad but it's too late. It's never bigger than the size of a quarter but after he does that he won't go on the pad.
So he is using his pad but then he's peeing on the floor within minutes after he just uses it. I never get mad at him but what can I do to correct/avoid this habit long term?
