potty training + puppy blues

I recently added Doug an 8 week old golden retriever to our family, he's so perfect and cute in every way possible! I've been having a lot of anxiety lately whether I've made a terrible mistake getting him. I want to give him the happiest and best life and I thought I read enough to understand the basic concepts of raising a puppy--books are nothing close to experiencing it haha.

He doesn't whine and sleeps through the night in his crate and I wake up atleast 2-3 times and take him to his pad. The vet said he can't go outside until he's 15 weeks due to vaccinations, but we have registered him into a puppy kindergarten socialization class for other puppies ages 8-16 weeks starting next Sunday.

Here's where I need guidance: I take him out and put him on the pad shortly after meals and typically around every 45 mins in general. Minus when I crate him to leave 2.5 hrs then I put him right on the pee pad. The good news is he is using it and I praise + treat him. But within 5-10 mins of using his pad he will start peeing on the floor. I try and pick him up to move him to the pad but it's too late. It's never bigger than the size of a quarter but after he does that he won't go on the pad.

So he is using his pad but then he's peeing on the floor within minutes after he just uses it. I never get mad at him but what can I do to correct/avoid this habit long term?

Congrats on your new puppy!

Are you training him to go on pee pads or outside? (Long-term)

If you're training him to go outside, I wouldn't use the pee pads. It can confuse them.

What would you suggest for outdoor training? I plan to take him to the park down the street but the vet has advised against this until his vaccinations are complete.

Thank you

I'm sorry, I assumed you had access to grass that wasn't public.
Using pads makes total sense if your vet said to wait until 15 weeks to take him out.

If you are using pads, I wouldn't be waking up all night to put him on them. Do you have an exercise pen? You can just pop him in there for the night with the pad on one side or even just use a gated off bathroom.
