Potty training 6 year old chihuahua

So I adopted my adult chihuahua last year. She is 6 years old now. Her owner before had a doggie door which as far as I know she used. She has been such as a pain since I have had her....she has peed on the carpet numerous timessage. It became less a sand less as she got more comfortable with the house but she continued to have accidents. I bought her a crate in hopes to train her however don't thiblame it was properly done because she pooped all over the crate the first time I put her in it. Never tried it since.

So I just moved out into amy apartment by myself and bought her a doggie door so she could go potty outside. I have a pretty large backyard for an apartment yet it has no grass. Anyways she uses her doggy door frequently, even throughout the night. The problem is when I go to work. She has been peeing on the carpet and ruined one area of my carpet. Im not sure if it's the cold weather causing her to no longer use her doggie door? I even set out pee pads and she uses them sometimes but today for example she peed right next to the pad rather than on it....I work 8-5 and come home at 12 for my lunch hour to let her out, but apparently it isn't enough...any ideas on how I can get her to not pee on the carpet? Any suggestions would be much appreciated..thanks

Also I should add I wish I could crate train her but I just think it could be cruel to keep her in there 8 hours a day with only one time out at noon.... that's why I was hoping the doggie door would work so she could make freely and go outside when she pleases.

Can you gate her somewhere so she still has access to the door but not the carpet? I'm not sure where the door is, but let's say it's in your kitchen, gate off the kitchen?

You could also gate her in a bathroom etc. She can probably hold it four hours but if not at least it would be on tile.

The pee pads can be a problem sometimes, she might do better without them

The first thing I would try is taking the pee pads away. They might be confusing her and giving her the message she can pee in the house.
If that doesn't help, since you come home in the middle of the day anyway, maybe just gate her in somewhere tiled and let her out when you get home
Good luck
