Unhappy Mean old dog soiling house

I could use some advice on a situation with my older dog. He is a 12 year old dachshund. Lately, he pees in the house multiple times a day. This morning I came downstairs and stepped in his pee. When we came home tonight, he had peed twice on the floor. And finally, he peed on the carpet right in front of my husband...right after I shampooed the floor.

This has been happening a lot lately. And it's a tough situation because he isn't a pleasant dog. He has never been very obedient, and he has bitten me multiple times. If I ask him to come and he doesn't want to, he will growl at me and lunge at me. His breath is so horrible that I can't stand to be near him. However, he is still very active, and seems to be otherwise healthy. He loves to play with our younger lab mix.

Please don't post mean judgmental comments against me. This is a tough situation and I don't know what to do. I don't want to leave him in his crate all the time. The peeing is out of control, and he will even do it in front of us. He is destroying our home and I don't know what to do.

If his breath is really bad he should have his teeth checked especially at his age. Some dogs as they get older cannot hold their pee as easily or he may be getting a little senile and have forgotten where he should be going.

No matter what, he should be checked out at the Vet.

Definitely a full vet check.

Can you try gating him in the kitchen when you are out or sleeping? At least it would be on tile some of the time.

Really bad breath could indicate an infection from rotted teeth...which could make your dog feel sick and alter his behavior, thus the peeling.
Also, I hope you are not yelling at, or punishing the dog when he urinates in the house. All that will do is stress the dog out even more.

As mentioned...Get him to the vets, he could have medical issues that are behind this behavior.

Have you had this dog his entire life?
What type of food does he eat?
Have you and your husband ever tried to give him obedience training?

As mentioned you should go to a vet and have him checked out. And in the process, remember there is a time and place for everything - even goodbyes.
