How to properly potty train my new shih-tzu puppy?

Hi everyone!

First posting here! Just got my new 9 week old shih-tzu puppy yesterday and I am already worried about properly training my new puppy to go potty! We built a "play pen" for him where he has a little cushion to sleep in, as well as his food/water bowls, and a wee wee pad. We work full-time so he will mostly be left alone in his locked play pen for about 8-9 hrs. We noticed that he will pee on the pad fine when he's locked in the play pen, but he will not poop on the pad. He will hold it in until we let him out to play around in the house, and then he will go where ever he pleases. We laid down a sheet on the rug because we didn't want to chewing on the edges of the rug, and we noticed that he started peeing and pooing on the sheets whenever he is out of the play pen. Is he confusing the sheets to be the place where he can relieve himself? What should we do to stop him from doing that? Should we pick him up and put him on the pee pad in his play pen so he knows to go there? Any response will be appreciated!!! I'm scared to take him outside because he hasn't had all of his shots yet, so in the meantime, we will have to train him to go potty in the house.

First I just want to suggest having someone come by the house to let the pup out. 8-9 hours is a long time to be left alone....

Also the second you get home you should be taking the dog outside to go potty. Then praise and treat for going outside. If you are taking him in your yard he should be fine without all his vaccines

Yes, he is confused! Actually, a puppy has absolutely no idea he should potty outside... there is no "should" about it for him. His only "morality" about potty is to potty away from his bed. Puppies also like to potty on absorbant materials, so rugs and such are attractive spots.

You need to TEACH him gently where you want him to go. This is all about building up repetition of the right pattern. As Pawz says, take him outside right away (as well as VERY frequently, before and after eating, before and after naps, after playing, a couple times an hour at this age, unless he is napping in his pen!)

REWARD him with a treat when he potties outside.
Do NOT punish him when he potties inside, or you will make him afraid to potty in front of you (which makes it hard to reward him outside) The puppy will have no idea the punishment is about "inside." Instead he will think its about pottying where you can see him.

You must keep your eyes on him every second when he is loose in the house so you can scoop him up to take him outside if he looks like he might need to potty!

Get this book. It will help you immensely! puppy primer puppy primer

Also, we have some good threads here about house training to read up on.

Good luck! and let us know if you have further questions.
