Adopted a senior citizen Boston terrier

Adopted a senior citizen Boston terrier...BIG MISTAKE! Actually I'm not so sure it's a mistake but I'm so frustrated. He is a nine-year-old dog, was brought into the shelter as a stray, so no previous knowledge of his behavior was given. We wanted a dog who would be a lap dog and companion to my husband who has dementia. So far so good. But the dog will not poop outside. We have had the dog three days and he has pooped in one area of the basement. If I can't fix this… And my experience with 14-year-old Yorky who was never completely housetrained tells me that it is very difficult to change an adult dog ...I will have to return the dog to the shelter I really don't want to do that. Is there any likelihood I can change the behavior of an adult Dog?

Have some patience. You have only had him for 3 days. everything is strange to him and its allot to take in. for a puppy or a grown dog. give him time to adjust and settle in first and then train him on where he is allowed to poop.

First up, give him a few weeks to get used to his new surroundings.
But yes, absolutely adult dogs can be trained and sometimes quicker than puppies
I'm in the middle of it now so if you need tips on what to do let me know
