Ben, how long was your dog in the crate?
Our puppy is in the crate only when we are not home and he is only in the crate for 3.5-4hrs at a time! Make sure your puppy goes potty before you put him/her in the crate!!

I'm crate training our new schnoodle pup. We're using a hard plastic animal carrier (she is only 2.5 pounds and we had bought a cage, but even a small one was too big for her and she would soil one end and sleep on the other). When we put her in, she whines for about a minute and then settles down for a nap, which is great progress as the first night she howled for 4 hours at a time. My goal is to get her to go into the crate on her own. We've tried feeding her in it, but she won't go in on her own even if the food is there. If we close her in with the food, she won't eat until we let her out and move the food to the kitchen. She has very few soiling accidents in there unless we leave her in too long (when we're at work, etc). She has toys in there but won't play with them in the crate. We do not have a large playpen or enclosure to keep her in where she wouldn't be harassed by our big cats. Any hints?
