Try this!!

My dog used to go sit by the door when he had to go outside and sometimes we wouldn't notice him there. He then started to paw and scratch at the door leaving marks. So we went and bought a Christmas bell dingly that is suppoised to hang off the tree. It is just five colorful strings with five large bells attached. We hung it from the doorknob and now everytime our dog has to go outside, he will go ring the bells on the door. We can hear them anywhere in the house and it lets us know he has to go out, rather than him scratching up the door.
It wasn't hard to get him to use the bells either. Just ring the bells and open the door. We repeated this untill he understood that when the bells rang the door would be opened. So then we showed him how to ring the bells with his nose, and then he would get to go out.

Very useful method and once I recommend quite often
the downside is "bell abuse" though! Lol

Potty bells were such a success with our first dog that we use them when we got a 2nd dog. Amazing how fast they learn with them. If they use them to just want to go outside then they don't get to play, if they potty first then they can play. Usually for play time we go out the back door and use the front door for potty.

Wish I could use a potty bell. We tried a potty bell with mine, she thought (and still does think) it's a tug toy . Since we can't hang a potty bell Camille and I have to watch her like a hawk and see every time she's near or walking near the door. It's embarrassing when she's just wanting to calmly sit by it and sun bathe or look out (glass sliding glass type door) and we get up and drag her out. She does the potty-squat just to appease us even though she doesn't have to go and so there is no pottying to be had.

I've used the bell trick with my German Shepherd mix (RIP) with great success and now with my Bully. The mix was house trained completely by 5 months. The Bully did it a few times, received praise or treats and now pees inside then rings the bell. She is so stubborn! Seems to me that larger dogs are sooooo much easier to housebreak!
