Baby Min Pin holds it in

We just added a 10 week old min pin to our ranks of multiple cats. She loves her crate and will hold her potty in while she is in her crate. It started out well, she would whimper while in her crate, we then would let her outside and she would go potty. Now when she starts to squat in the house we catch her, let her out, and then she acts like she doesn't have to go. She waits us out sometimes 30 minutes or so until we let her back in and then she goes inside the house. This obviously isn't a case of her not being able to hold it because she does just fine holding it. Why is she so darn insistent about going potty inside and holding it outside until she has a chance to go potty inside? I took her with me to my business for the first time today and same thing. She would start to go inside so I grab her and take her out and she holds it until we get back inside. I even put her back in her crate for an hour or two and try again. Same thing happens, she starts to squat inside and won't go potty outside.

When you take her out do you watch her? If so she might not want to be watched. I had a foster dog that way, rather interesting to make sure they went potty without them knowing I was watching them.

When you first catch her squatting in the house and take her out, she has been startled she hasnt worked out what to do yet. So it seems staying out there for 30 mins isnt long enough, she needs to be settled down and relaxed.

My advise is when you take her out, dont look at her. Take her to a spot to "go" in and say go potty and dont let her know you are watching. When she does go.... praise praise praise and "good girl, you went potty" things of that nature.

Thanks for the advice. I will give it a try. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. When she goes in the house she'll either sneak off to another room or wait until our back is turned for a second. When we take her outside to go, we are eagerly watching and waiting for her to go. I'll take your suggestion and see what happens.

Welcome, Cardigon!

It sounds like you're doing everything right. Min pins are one of the top 10 hardest breeds to potty train! They are notorious for not going in cold weather, wet weather, etc. One other thing you can try is set up an xpen with potty pads, and if she potties on one of the pads, take it outside with you. It may just take time and consistency because, again, pins are harder to potty train typically. I've stolen all this info from http://pawpals.zeussdoghouse.com/showthread.php?t=3588.

It sounds like you're doing everything right, but you can also review House Training How Tos:.

Good luck!
