Will my dog miss her companion

Until today I had 2 female Rottys. Sadly,my 12 year old had to be euthanized today. To say the least..I am devastated. But I am more concerned about her companion who was brought in as a puppy 5 years ago. Do you think she will be adversly affected by the loss of her "room mate"? My plan at this point is to spend a lot of time with Chloe,(my healthy dog), and hopefully she will adjust quickly. Or am I just assuming my dog thinks like I do? My other dog was "Miesha"...one of the most gentle Rottys you can imagine. I was by her side at the vets until the very end. It was cancer and I did not want her to suffer just so I could "have her". The tears come easy right now,but I feel I did the best thing. But I digress. Anyone have any experience with two dogs suddenly being seperated? Thanks.

Im so sorry for your loss of your beloved Miesha. Please know that you preformed the kindest and most loving act a pet owner can do. You Miesha is now painfree and happy.

Please give both yourself and Chloe time. Chloe will be depressed with the loss of her pal, but in time she will adjust.

My thoughts and prayers are with both of you during this difficult time. Please know that if you need support or a shoulder, we are here for you.

Hugs

Tincture of time?

Thankyou for your kindness. It has been about a week and Chloe seems
depressed. She is eating ok,and I take her with me in my suv...even when I'm working. I'm in outside sales so she is never alone in the car for more than an hour. The weather is 40-50 degrees so she is not overheating and I keep a gallon of water for her in the car. What bothers me is that she seems to want to sleep unless I am playing with her or directly interacting with her. Also, she has a huge tub of toys. Before Miesha passed,Chloe loved to play with her toys and was constantly parading around the house with a toy in her mouth as if it were a trophy. Since Miesha has been gone Chloe has not touched her toys. This is really tearing me up. I find myself crying again as I type this. I just wish there was something I could do. I just don't feel as if running out and getting another dog is the right thing to do at this point. When my head is a little more clear in a month or two, then I might consider it. Right now I don't feel as if Chloe or I are in a clear enough state of mind to make that decision. Miesha was a very people friendly dog but disliked other dogs. I had to bring Chloe in as a pup. That was the only way Miesha would accept her. Miesha was always alpha...even when she became ill. Chloe weighs 110. Miesha weighed 85. Even though Chloe was much larger and stronger,(and 6 years younger) than Miesha, she would always submit. There were many times when Chloe would try to gain status by crowding Miesha or putting her head over Mieshas ....you know the "challenge" thing. But Miesha always won out. And duing those six years the two dogs were together there was never one actual dogfight. A little snarl or snap very occasionally but never a fight. Chloe is very animal friendly but not particularly people friendly until she is introduced. Then she is very friendly and playful. If I brought another dog in I'm not sure I would want to house train another puppy but it may be hard to find a young dog that is house trained that does not have problems. It seems that usually people don't give up their animals unless there is a major issue. Any thoughts on my ramblings? Oh, my father was born in Nashville. I have never been there but I have located the house he was raised in and I am going to fly down and find it. According to the records I have,it is a historical site. Thanks again for your support. You are very kind. Rick.

I am so sorry for your loss. And I understand your concern. One of my two has cancer - nasal tumor - and the prognosis is not good. Astro has to spend one night at the vet when they were running tests and my other dog Mia was MISERABLE and it was only one night. I can't imagine how miserable she will be when we have to take Astro to the vet for the last time.

I have been involved with rescues for a few years and I know MANY dogs that are given up for other reasons than because of behavior problems. In this economy, they are getting some really well behaved dogs in because the families can't afford to care for them. Maybe you should check the rescues in your area and see if they might have a good match for you and Chloe. Many of the dogs at rescues live in foster homes and will come house trained if you adopt something other than a puppy.

Let us know what you decide. You and Chloe are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. It is so hard. I lost my best friend Bear Bear to cancer. She was 5. About chloe, watch her carefully. She could grieve a long time. Some dogs do. Sometmes it is good to get another companion for her and it might be good for you too. You are not replacing your Miesha. One pet can't replace another. But think that you could save a life by adopting.
