Question What's this tattoo on my dog?

Hello all

I've just taken on a rescue dog and found this tattoo on her groin! Does anyone know what it means?

It's either 523 or S23.

Ive never seen it in number form before, so I may be wrong, but many places that do low cost spay/neuter, and shelters, will tattoo a dog so that the dog, if ever lost/given up again, doesn't have to go through unnecessary surgery to see if it's spayed or not. my female BC has a little green line on her inner thigh and my male crested has a line right on... His uh... Area!

Hi

In some countries this is/was a common method for registration. Before the microchip/transponder chip became popular for identification and registration, dogs were tattooed.

Greetings

Thank you!

Any idea which countries do this? It's all a bit of a mystery as it would seem to indicate that she's an import!

Sounds/looks like a spay/neuter tattoo more than an import tattoo to me....especially given the area it is in. Because females are pretty much impossible to tell if they are altered or not (the scars can fade to invisibility) a permanent marking is used by many clinics (especially low-cost/shelter clinics). It saves putting the dog through unnecessary anesthesia and being opened up only to discover they have already been through the surgery.

Thanks - i should add, in the country I live in we don't - and never have - done tattoos for spay/neuter. Which means she is almost 100% an import.

My neighbour has a show Lab, and he's tatooed in the groin - it's a breeder mark.

Holly has an ear tattoo given to her by the vet when she was spayed. Our cat has an ear tattoo, as well. It's the common thing here - microchips have not caught on.

DogTip Dog Tattoos -- there are some names/numbers of registries in this article - might be worth contacting them to find out if they can help you figure out whether that particular combination is trace-able -- never know, the owner might be looking for the dog.

I've had three fosters come in with tattoos, usually it just means they have been spayed/neutered. One of the dogs had a very long tattoo (something along the lines of AB123456CD789, just not in that order of course). I tracked it back to a shelter that would tattoo the dogs shelter identification number on the stomach.. my dog has internal stainless steel stitches, some places use these so the vet can feel them through the skin, it is another indicator that the surgery has been done.

Thanks - I tried emailing the NDR but the email bounced back, mailbox full.

Possibly - but the UK's tattoo registry has no record of it, and if someone in the USA is looking for it, it'll cost a heck of a lot to get their dog back!

Plus if she was imported from the USA then she will have gone through 6 months quarantine, and there will be some kind of import record somewhere. The PETS scheme was only extended to include the USA in 2004 and I believe a microchip is mandatory.

We've been using microchips in our animals in the UK for about 12 years now, and most imports have them. She had no chip until last week.
