Red face The time your dog got loose?

OK Tonka prompted me for this-discussion in 'you know what we need'-hilaroius story of his dog getting loose-soooo guys own up-when did your dog get loose and was it as funny as Tonka's story? SHARE

Mikey got loose right after we got him home. He was sooo good we weren't even concerned. It was like-week two. My parents were over for the evening to visit and see the new addition. We were talking on and on about how good he was and downplaying his quirks-and well if Mikey could blush he should have been blushing.

I am VERY careful. My dog goes in the yard supervised. My dog is always on a leash. We didn't go off leash until we worked on solid recall. He's tagged and microchipped. AND I only walked him on one route so that IF he got out, he might go that way and we could find him easily.

So that's when it happened. A plastic spatula slipped through the rack on the dishwasher-melted on the heat element-and the smell was TERRIBLE. I am really sensitive to smell and really bad smells cause a reaction-migraine, naseau and itchy mouth. So I ran around opening windows...and doors.
I KIND of ASSUMED the other THREE people in the house would watch Mikey while I did that.
Stupid. Yeah three grown adults sat there while Mikey toodled out the front door (likely distressed because I was distressed-he's super sensitive).

So I sit down and go where's Mikey and they're all like deer in headlights. So that hits the fan. I check the house and the yard and then hysterically bark orders. Ever seen two large men slink out of a house scared of a girl? Yeah-Dad and Dave hit the road, my mom stays in the door way. I head to the park-and to the highway...to look for his body. All the while I'm going 'is this it? Is this the only time I get with him? He's gone now?' I RAN the entire park and the highway and then a neighbor found me and told me my mom and MIKEY were in the window -I guess he'd just popped into the neighbors yard and laid down...Should have checked that maybe....

So he had a safe return in minutes-but I was wound up for the whole night I tell ya!!!

So tell me -what happened when it happened to you?

I stated this one a while ago. Julie came over and Betty bolted for the door. She had no recall at that time so she totally ignored me running after her. She ran up the street baying and barking at everything.

She headed up a driveway and I thought it was my chance to corner her, so I began to sprint. Right then, my knee popped out of place and I took a full speed dive into the street.

I sat up, said about 6 cuss words and turned to see where Betty had gone. The little turd was sitting down and panting in my face like nothing had gone wrong. I took her back to the house and all Julie saw was my torn up pants covered in blood from a gaping wound in my arm. You should have seen the look on her face.

OK and to add to that-Mandy was a little escape artist. My parent's fence is about eight feet tall-tall enough to thwart a husky...but the front door. Little bugger would get out when someone opened the door to the mailman or someone visiting. We'd spend hours-following her...it's called 'trolling' -all husky owners know it-you drive beside them with the car door open until they are tired and get in...Once it was forty below and being me I beaned out the door after her in socks...it was terrible!
Then once she got out (she'd go into the neighbors yard to eat flowers and we'd spent hours trying to corner and catch her!) and I was so scared and mad I just stomped and pointed at the door and said...yelled...'get your a@@ in there!!!!' and she did! that's what was needed. Now she's going nowhere fast, but that's all we needed to do, understand dog and husky and instead of turn it into chase...do the 'I'm done messing around' thing you do with a kid-and yeah -totally went back home...
Mandy never escaped where we were like 'oh where is she' but always in tow following the brat while she toured the neighborhood eating flowers and shirking kind helpful neighbors :sigh:

My dog gets loose every day.. hell, he can let himself in and out of the house freely. He even shuts the door behind him! LoL. Eli just doesn't care enough to go anywhere, so he stays in our yard. Even when people pass by in exciting ways (riding bikes, jogging, or walkin with another animal for example) he's like "eh, whatever.. " - He might bark once or twice to let everyone know what's up, but he doesn't do anything other than that.

He is constantly going places with me (hiking and what not) so he doesn't really care about exploring by himself. I got luucky with him too, he just has a great calm personality over all. Unlike my past dogs, they're all insane. <3 <3

This will make me look like the worst dog owner in the history of the world, but it was four years ago and I feel a bit more "together" now.

Let me preface this with that we used to live right off a very busy road that became the highway about a mile down from our house.

When Smalls was a tiny puppy, we lived in a house that had a door, a few stairs, and the door to the outside. House rule was keep the door to the stairs closed and ALWAYS check for her/me before opening. We were taking out garbage and a roommate opened the door without checking and out she flew. She's probably 4 months old when this happens and has absolutely no interest in recall, me, or any thing but what she is set on which was RUN FREE. She bolted out into the road, in the middle of 5 PM rush hour traffic, and was nearly creamed by a jeep. I remember screaming. This is where it legitimately turns funny. If I could describe the way she looked at the car, stopped inches from her, you would die. It was a look full of disdain and "MOVE." before she took off running straight down the middle of the road, around stopped cars who were trying to avoid hitting her.

I know better than to give chase, but we had no choice. It was either that or lose sight of her completely and it was not so nice of an area that I didn't want to lose a puppy in. So me and my roommate, a 6'7'' scrawny guy with flaming red hair in his undies and a tank top, went running down the road after her, weaving around cars in the process. About two blocks away we pass a friends house, and they're out on the porch. They watch Smalls go by, then see us, and then join the chase. Repeat with TWO more houses. There were 9 people chasing this puppy and she was absolutely not slowing or stopping.

This went on for 10 blocks before we just so happened to come upon another one of our roommates, walking home from the store. He dropped his bag, stood like a line backer, and snatched Smalls up in the air right as she ran between his legs.

I would say a good 3 months after that Smalls was tethered to me.

I had three get out at once.

I was bringing som'thing in or out of the front gate, I forget.... and the dogs are all trained to no go out the gate unless invited...well, while juggling the items, I accidentally made a motion, or som'thing that in hindsight was very much like their release cue and right on cue three of them bolt out the gate and begin to tear ass up the street as fast as they can...after a cat. I imediatly had the vision of having to pick and chose who to follow if they split up

They already had covered a bit of ground by the time I screamed Emma! Tippy! Kiwi! and to my shock, I mean real shock they all stopped on Dimes and came running back at me...so I threw the gate open and ran into the yard for them to chase me and all was well.

But I mean, I was really shocked, Tippy can't hear me well (when she can her recall is good) but normally I have to call her a few times, and Kiwi was new and really hadn't had much training yet...

but yeah, crisis averted.

We don't often have this problem. Deedee's grown out of it. Sparky only runs off if I'm not home (and he finds a way out of the yard, usually only if somebody leaves the gate open or something). Though even then, if we leave the gate wide open and are home they'll stay. Or more so if I'm home. Sparkys a real mamas boy.

We wern't home for this, but the neighbour informed my family. Our house is up for sale and we had some people looking. We had to leave for this. Apparently Sparky got out, went across the road and walked into the neighbours garage. Which then linked into the house. He was just walking around, and then when he spotted my neighbour he started barking Lol.

Any other time he gets out he stays in the neighbourhood. I feel safe knowing he'd only ever get as far as his best doggie friends house which is just down the road. Twice now his bestie Splash has broken out, and ran straight to our house to play. I swear they have some sort of gay doggie marriage. But as soon as I find Sparky, I just call him if he hasn't already seen me. As soon as he spots me he comes bounding back and we race home. He always wins :'(

Deedee used to get out a lot. But now she just... doesnt. One time when I was like 12, it was the morning and we couldn't find her. I rode my bike all around town in my pjs and bed hair. I was freaking out. Then I come back to the house, and just as I'm almost there, across the road I see a flash of black and white. She was playing with another dog. A german shepherd. The funny thing is, thats the same dog everyone told us to watch out for when we first moved here. Because it was 'vicious'. Ummm.... when I was like 10 I remember just going up to it, sticking my hand over the fence and patting it. Lucky for me it didn't freak and rip my arm apart! Silly me. And my 4 kg dog always went over to play with it lol.

With my first dog Roxy, we had her for a several months, she was still unspayed and somehow while walking her she got loose from my hand and she wouldn't come back. she ran with her leash trailing behind her, I ran behind her, she dashes across a road barely missing getting hit by a car and I have to wait for the stupid car to pass before running after her and as soon as I cross the street in the townhouse complex there on the front stoop of one of the first houses, there was a little white Westie-like dog just sitting there on an outdoor tie and she was just sitting next to him sniffing him all over (and I am assuming it was a him and it was unneutered for her to do this.) I have no clue how she knew the dog was at that particular house cus there are woods blocking that view of the house from where she was. but yea, a dog's instinct i guess.

Buffy's already gotten out about 4 times I think, but only one of them was completely my fault. That time was once when I was taking some trash out through the back gate. Up to that point she would listen to me when I told her to stay, but that day she decided to bolt out before I could grab her.

She just ran over on my neighbor's lawn and up his walkway. I yelled her name but it had no effect. Then I said "Do you want some cheese?" which was apparently the magic phrase. I thought she was just teasing me, as she ran past me and across my lawn, but I repeated it and headed for the back gate, and she followed. I really had to force myself to praise her for coming back rather than yell at her for running away. I think she was about 4 months old then.

A similar thing happened when my parents were watching her at their house, and the cheese phrase worked again. =) I'm glad I told them what worked when she got out for me.

The other two times she got away from me were because she learned to escape from two different harnesses when she got excited on a walk in the park. I had no idea she would be able to get out of these harnesses, and was lucky that she ran directly to people who were nice enough to grab her for me both times.
